The October 2011 Size Estimations from a July 2011 Snapshot

(Note: this is an update to the September Report)

In early July 2011, the NCI made available, in the newly created The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA), an extended set of 1308 chest CT and X-Ray scans, documented by the Lung Imaging Database Consortium (LIDC) and the Image Database Resource Initiative (IDRI). This set includes the 401 CT scans available from the NBIA archive and adds 907 new scans: 617 CT scans, for a total of 1018 CT scans, and 290 X-Ray scans. The total number of cases (subjects within TCIA) is 1010.

All the CT scans and their XML documentation were downloaded. The data was pre-processed to extract the radiologists' drawn boundaries for nodules estimated to have a diameter of 3 mm or larger and to identify the unique regions of interests (ROI) corresponding to the (estimated) physical nodules; the grouping of boundaries into unique ROIs was performed by the MAX software. See the caveat concerning complicated nodules or overlapped markings in the MAX description. The available boundaries were then analyzed to provide the volumetric size estimates by filling the region within the boundary (excluding the boundary itself) and computing the nodule volume as the product of the number of nodule voxels and the voxel size. In this release all of the CT scans and their documentations have been fully processed. The 142 cases with no large lesions to be processed are listed in the following sections of these notes.

At this time we have not produced a nodule list for the 290 Chest X-Ray images.

Cases with only small nodule or non-nodule markings

For the following 142 cases the radiologist found only small nodules or non-nodules, i.e. features in the CT scan that might be noted, but that are considered not to be nodules. These markings are recorded in the XML documentation, but, as there are no large lesions to be reported, these cases do not appear in the report tables.

Notes on cases with issues

For the following cases there were processing issues that have been resolved.

LIDC‑IDRI‑0107
Image file 000135.dcm had parsing errors and, being the last slice in the scan, was skipped.
LIDC‑IDRI‑0123
The scans is comprised of two overlapping acquisitions.
LIDC‑IDRI‑0146
There are two image files at the same axial position ‑212.50 (as reported by DICOM tag (0020,1041), Slice Location).
LIDC‑IDRI‑0340
The descriptions of boundaries with noduleIDs "0" and "1" are largely overlapping, so nodule "0" was excised and nodule "1" processed (by arbitrary choice).
LIDC‑IDRI‑0418
There are five overlapping image pairs at the axial locations from ‑170.0 to ‑175.0 (as reported by DICOM tag (0020,1041), Slice Location).
LIDC‑IDRI‑0566
The XML file for this case has four extra readingSession tags in addition to the standard four. The first four were used for processing the case; the other four appear to be erroneous and were excised from the XML file.
LIDC‑IDRI‑0572
There are two overlapping slices at the axial location 49.98 (as reported by DICOM tag (0020,1041), Slice Location).
LIDC‑IDRI‑0672
According to the intervals between consecutive slices, there are three missing images at locations ‑164.899994, ‑235.524994, ‑271.774994.
LIDC‑IDRI‑0979
There are five overlapping image pairs at the axial locations from ‑140.0 to ‑145.0 (as reported by DICOM tag (0020,1041), Slice Location).
